**When Babybel Buys Brain Food**
5h ago · 4 sources · M&A
Bel US just went shopping in the kids aisle. The company acquired Ingenuity Foods’ Brainiac and Little Brainiac brands, folding them into a portfolio that already includes GoGo squeeZ and Babybel. Ingenuity Foods will keep operating under its current leadership, so the founder DNA stays in place.
Brainiac plays in fruit snacks, juices and pouches fortified with omega-3 DHA, choline and lutein. The pitch is simple. Support brain development and health for kids. Syndicated data showed Brainiac delivered triple-digit retail sales growth last year. That kind of velocity gets strategics moving fast.
Bel says the deal complements GoGo squeeZ and expands its fruit snack offering for toddlers and younger children. It also fits into a broader North American growth strategy, following expansion of its South Dakota production facility. CEO Peter McGuinness called it a “1+1=3 opportunity.” Translation, plug a fast-growing functional brand into a scaled distribution machine.
There is nuance here. BBB National Programs’ National Advertising Division said Brainiac could support some claims like “supports immunity” and “help close the brain nutrition gap.” It could not support claims that its applesauce “promotes brain health” due to insufficient DHA levels in submitted studies.
Why it matters. Big CPG is not just buying snacks. It is buying permission to talk about function in the kids aisle. Brain health snacks are creeping mainstream, and Bel wants a front row seat. The next fight is not flavor. It is proof.
