**When Tomatoes Outrun Beef**
5h ago · 5 sources · trend
Grocery inflation is heating up again, and tomatoes are leading the charge.
Tomato prices jumped nearly 40% year over year in April, the fastest climb across food-at-home categories tracked by the BLS. Beef is not far behind in spirit. Prices are up more than 16% since January 2025 as US cattle supplies sit at a 75-year low. Producers have been slow to retain heifers, which means relief is not coming fast.
April marked a turning point at the shelf. Food consumed at home rose 0.7% month over month, reversing a 0.2% decline in March. Zoom out and the pressure builds. Energy prices climbed 17.9% year over year, with fuel oil up 54.3% and gasoline up 28.4%. The Strait of Hormuz handles roughly a fifth of global oil flows, and disruption there has rattled crude and freight markets. Fertilizer costs in central Illinois are up more than $20 per acre versus six months before the Iran conflict.
Globally, the FAO Food Price Index hit 130.7 points in April, up 1.6% from March. Vegetable oils surged 5.9% month on month.
Shoppers feel it. About 37% say they will switch brands for the right promotion, and 44% are engaging with loyalty offers and apps.
Why it matters. Cost pressure is broad, from farm inputs to freight to finished goods. Brands cannot hide behind one bad crop. The contrarian take. Promotions are back in power. In a world of rising inputs, the sharpest pricing strategy wins the basket.
